Captain Gerrard, sire of last year's Nunthorpe hero Alpha Delphini, was one of two UK based stallions who were sold to Iranian owners in November 2019. The deal was brokered by bloodstock agent Federico Barberini on behalf of Hamid Khalili, a Melbourne-based architecture lecturer, and Daniel Jabbari, another architect who stands the Group 1-winning Arabian stallion Aim South at Haras de Thouars in France.
Last year the new owners also bought United Color, a son of Ghostzapper who finished third in the Golden Shaheen, and has taken up stud duty in Tehran, and Captain Gerrard has now followed him to Iran to take up stud duties there.
By Champion Sire Oasis Dream, who has himself sired fifteen Group 1 winners.
Captain Gerrard was one of the first of his colts to go to stud, and has proved to be a good source of 2yos. He was a high-class, tough, and precocious sprint 2 year old, who showed his resilience by running 10 times as a juvenile, winning five times, and by 3 years of age he had achieved two Group 3 wins.
According to Bryan Smart, who trained him throughout his racing career, he also had a great temperament.
He retired to Mickley Stud in 2010, and has stood here every year since, though he also shuttled to Australia for several years. He had his first runners on the racecourse in 2013, achieving a strike rate of 31% winners to runners in his first crop, which saw him win the TBA leading British based first season Sire of 2013. He has since maintained a strike rate of 46% winners to runners worldwide.
This Stakes-producing stallion has since sired 55 individual winners of over 150 races. His best performers include:
ALPHA DELPHINI, his first Stakes winner, who landed the Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes (LR)
GERRARD'S QUEST, 2nd in the Qatar Derby (Group 1) and also Group 2-placed
WEE JEAN, Listed-placed, 2nd in the Coral Distaff (LR) and 3rd in the Sandringham Handicap (LR) at Royal Ascot
WINNERS PIONEER, placed in two Listed Races and a Group 3 in Italy,
Listed runners-up GEA AND TEA and IDATWO, plus six-time winner MEADWAY.
His stock inherit his tough and easy going nature and trainers regularly comment on their precocious yet amenable characters.
His yearlings were bought in 2016 by Tom Dascombe, Jo Hughes, Kubler Racing among others.
"His progeny are tough, sound, and consistent"
- Mick Channon, trainer of Wee Jean (4 wins) and King Crimson (7 wins).
