The famous silks carried to victory by triple Grand National winner Red Rum were in the winners enclosure again at Carlisle on Wednesday, after Lastbutnotleast, the last horse bought by Red Rum’s trainer Ginger McCain, and trained by his son Donald, gave him his third winner from the first three races at the course.
McCain said: “She’s a bit special, she’s the last horse Dad bought me, hence the name. We think plenty of her, she’s going to want three miles in time.” McCain explained how his father had purchased the mare, saying: “He bought her as a foal and Dad was normally a £500 man with foals. Richard Kent from Mickley Stud rang him and said, ‘I’ve seen this mare’, and they gave good solid money for her as a foal.” Red Rum’s colours may once again have some big days ahead given the significant promise Lastbutnotleast has shown.
